The First Iranian Women’s Sports Magazine

Shirzanan, “heroine” in Persian, is an online weekly publication holding the distinction as the first online Iranian women’s sports magazine – featuring an underreported subject with vast women’s rights implications.

Shirzanan covers both amateur and professional sporting events, performances and news.  The wide-ranging reports include societal restrictions placed on women – such as the clothing and hijab; the controversial public attendance of women at public sporting events; the complications of male trainers of female athletes; and the discrimination against women holding official positions in athletic federations and organizational committees.

Shirzanan therefore publicizes sports developments involving Iranian and other Muslim women while contributing to the debate about women’s civil and political rights’ status.
